“It's not always being fast or even accurate that counts, it's being willing. I found out early that most men, regardless of cause or need, aren't willing. They blink an eye or draw a breath before they pull the trigger - and I won't.” –– J. B. Books "The Shootist"

Your Instructors

Donna Rolls

How did you become interested in firearms training and in particular focusing on women?
I, like so many women, was fearful of firearms even though I did enjoy shooting at the range. I had been told that guns were animate objects, that they would jump off the table and shoot someone all by themselves. After taking firearms training classes I realized that knowlege of the safe use of a gun makes it that much more enjoyable, I felt that I would like to share that with as many women as I could. What better way to do that than to become a Certified Instructor.

Why did you start LFT?
Honestly, we felt a need in this area for instructors and especially for female instructors. For myself, finding an instructor in the Sacramento area proved to be difficult and finding a female instructor, was impossible.

How does firearms training mesh with your past career?
Not really at all as a 35 year career Hair Designer but the teaching certainly does. I did a lot of teaching as a Hair Designer and, well, teaching is teaching whatever the discipline. The ability to effectively impart knowledge to someone is the key, if you can do that in one discipline you should certainly be able to do it in others.

What benefit does your organization provide to your community?
For those who choose to own firearms in our community, it provides the knowledge of safe handling and the legal knowledge they may need for personal protection in their homes. Far too often we sit and do nothing about the problems we face in society, by providing this education to others I can take an active role in a positive change in my community.

What one thing do you consider critical in your method of teaching?
I will have to parrot Guy on this one. Safety, safety SAFETY! When you walk away from one of our classes understanding this we will have accomplished a large part of our goal.

How did you become interested in firearms training and in particular focusing on women?
It was not a hard leap at all really, in business I did a lot of training for a lot of people of diverse groups and I always loved it, seeing the light bulb come on above their heads when they got it. Additionally in the golf business at that time women were an underserved market segment that I focused on heavily. Well the same holds true in firearms and personal protection training today so it just made sense to make that our focus.

Why did you start LFT?
I could give you a lot of business double talk but the bottom line was I enjoy shooting and I enjoy imparting that skill and knowledge to others. So really, for the fun of it.

How does firearms training mesh with your past career?
Throughout my life I have always been in the knowledge business, getting paid for teaching others what I knew. Firearms training is just about the same, I learn, I know, I teach, guess you could say I have been doing it my entire life.

What benefit does your organization provide to your community?
I am not sure it is the whole community that benefits but the womens segment certainly benefits from a learned confidence, that they do not have to depend on someone else to protect them, that they are capable and able to defend themselves and not become a victim. This country is too full of "victims" today and I am just trying to rectify that one woman at a time.

What one thing do you consider critical in your method of teaching?
That is a tough question really, obviously you want your student to learn and enjoy and that means putting the rounds down range on target. I guess really the most critical thing I can impart is that firearms used in an irresponsible manner can be dangerous, so really if you learn one thing from me it would be Safety, Safety, Safety.
